Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Addis Ababa – Bale Mountains National Park
Morning departure driving from Addis to the Bale Mountains National Park headquarters in Dinsho. In the afternoon, take a leisurely hike through the Gaysay Grasslands. This is an excellent area for spotting endemic mammals like the Mountain Nyala and Menelik’s Bushbuck, as well as various bird species like the Blue-winged Goose and Wattled Ibis. Overnight camp.
Day 2: Trekking to Finchi Habera
We enter the National Park and trek for approximately 5 hours toward Finchi Habera. Around Dinsho, the Mountain Nyala should be visible. As we move deeper into the park, keep an eye out for the Ethiopian Wolf. We will stop at the Habera Waterfall for a break before reaching our campsite. Overnight camp.
Day 3: Wasama Valley and the Ethiopian Wolf
Today’s 8-hour trek takes us to Wasama through stunning landscapes. We pass through the Mararo Valley, where Lammergeier and Verreaux’s Eagles nest. This is prime territory for the Ethiopian Wolf, the rarest canid in the world. We will look for these solo hunters among the rodent-rich alpine meadows. Overnight camp.
Day 4: Mt. Wasama and Lake Gebre Gurracha
We start the day by hiking up Mt. Wasama (4,200m) and then descend into the Worgona Valley. Falcons and raptors are common here. We end the day at Lake Gebre Gurracha (“Black Lake”), nestled in a dramatic glacial valley. Trekking time is approximately 8 hours. Overnight camp.
Day 5: Sanetti Plateau – Addis Ababa
Take a short 2-hour trek up to the Sanetti Plateau to meet the vehicles. This plateau is the best place to see the Ethiopian Wolf in the wild. We then begin the drive back to Addis Ababa, concluding with a cultural dinner and music before your departure transfer.
